The Logistical and Creative Challenge of Incremental Scripts

For John Weckworth, Visual Effects Supervisor at Onyx Visual Effects, the production cycle of Paradise Season 2 was defined by adaptability. Because scripts arrived incrementally, the studio was unable to engage in long-term forward planning or preemptive pipeline development.

"We don’t know what we’re getting ourselves into until we get the next script, so it’s not like we can do a lot of forward planning," Weckworth explains. "We build these set pieces or do different visual effects for particular scenes, and we often do not go back to them."

This reactive workflow meant that the true scale of the season’s climax remained veiled until mid-production. As the later scripts trickled in, the magnitude of the finale became apparent. The creative team realized that the production was banking heavily on the final episodes, packing the script with massive visual effects beats that included the complete implosion of a massive mountain and a sweeping aerial flyover across a devastated American landscape. These distinct, high-impact sequences ultimately provided the rich material necessary to compile the studio’s Emmy submission reel.

Engineering the Denver Flyover and Mountain Implosion

Among the standout achievements of the season finale is the complex Denver flyover sequence. Helmed by director Hanelle Culpepper, who provided detailed storyboards alongside Onyx’s previsualization (previs) team, the shot presented significant cinematography hurdles. The sequence combined live-action helicopter or drone footage with extensive computer-generated environments and digital matte paintings.

According to John Brennick, Compositing Supervisor for Paradise Season 2, marrying captured plate photography with art-directed virtual camera motion required intensive research and development (R&D). "You have a camera that was already in motion, and now you’re needing to marry that motion into another camera that is being art-directed," Brennick notes.

To bridge the visual gap, Digital Matte Painting (DMP) Supervisor Meliza Fermin and her team rebuilt extensive background plate environments, allowing the virtual camera to seamlessly transition away from the survivor camp and glide over the destroyed mountain topography. Utilizing 3D camera stabilization and advanced projection techniques, the team mapped out a bird’s-eye view to identify potential parallactic errors and camera drift before finalizing the composite.

The geography of the shot further complicated matters. Originally conceived as a continuous, uninterrupted "oner" spanning from the campsite to the crater and the Denver airport, the sequence required severe spatial manipulation.

"The difficult part was going from a campsite all the way up to a mountain crater in the amount of time that we had," reveals Evan Underwood, CG Supervisor for Season 2. "We had to shrink the world without the viewer knowing it. To do that, we tilted the campsite in CG, Inception-style, but you wouldn’t realize it because the camera is also tilted." By masking the transition with darkness, shadows, and strategically elevated tree lines, the visual effects team compressed vast geographical distances into a breathless, continuous cinematic moment.

The sequence culminated in the catastrophic implosion of the mountain itself—a sequence that demanded rigorous timing and art direction. Initial rough simulations were presented to the showrunners early in the editing process to establish pacing. With the final pre-explosion-to-collapse sequence locked at approximately 90 seconds, Underwood and his team had to accelerate the natural physics of a mountain collapse by a factor of two or three without making the colossal geological formation look like a miniature model.

"We spent a lot of time figuring out how to speed up the mountain implosion while still making it look massive and realistic," Underwood says. The final shot relied on dense layers of cascading smoke, tumbling debris, and a precise structural "buckling" phase, where the mountain’s core crumbles inward before releasing a massive radial shockwave of dust and pulverized rock.

Early-Season Environmental Work and the Graceland Sequence

While the finale captured the ultimate destruction, Onyx’s environmental world-building began in the opening episodes of the season. In Episode 201, characters observe a massive, ominous tornado swirling in the distance from a balcony at Graceland. Despite its brief screen time, the shot required immense volumetric detail.

"It’s a huge visual effect that goes by so quickly," Weckworth observes. "Even scripted, it’s supposed to be, ‘What is that back there?’ It wasn’t supposed to be until the lightning flashed that you noticed something is swirling back there. Some of these things we are asked to do are a heavy lift for just a few frames onscreen."

The tornado was initially modeled and lit in a simulated daylight environment to establish its scale and internal volume. Once the structural look was approved, the asset was handed over to Brennick’s compositing team, who over-lit the asset for nighttime conditions and implemented procedural lightning passes. This pipeline allowed the compositing team complete, granular control over the timing of internal flashes, ensuring that the surrounding clouds illuminated the night sky realistically.

Later in the season, the narrative shifts to a telescope point-of-view shot designed to anchor the audience’s perspective on the planetary scale of the disaster. As supervolcano eruptions in Antarctica trigger global tsunamis and atmospheric collapse, a character looks through a telescope toward downtown Memphis, witnessing an encroaching wall of water, a distant chemical plant explosion resembling a nuclear blast, and a rushing shockwave that impacts the surrounding bystanders.

Fermin and the DMP department faced significant spatial compression challenges while constructing this view from the blue-screen Graceland balcony set. "I had to create everything from the balcony, in-between, place the CG museum, do all of the clouds and sky," Fermin recalls. "Then they were like, ‘We want to see the water as well.’"

Because objects viewed through a magnified telescope lens move deceptively slowly relative to their actual velocities, the team had to artificially regulate traffic speeds, pedestrian panic, and the fluid dynamics of the urban floodwaters. The water simulation, generated in Houdini, had to accurately reflect the meticulously modeled CG buildings created in Maya, all while maintaining the compressed, foreshortened perspective of optical glass.
