"That brought a whole new set of players into the market. And then they start and they’re like, Well, what’s this ‘Magic: The Gathering’ game? Let me try that. Or because ‘Star Wars: Unlimited’ is super fun, and I’m a Star Wars nerd, let me shift over and see what’s ‘Riftbound’ all about? What’s ‘One Piece’? So you get a diversification of games that I think is fun for the entire community." This influx of new players represents a significant growth opportunity for TCGPlayer, as it provides a platform for these emerging games and encourages cross-pollination between different card game communities.

TCGPlayer’s acquisition by eBay in 2022 for approximately $300 million has positioned it within a larger e-commerce ecosystem. "Similar to TCGPlayer, I would say eBay loves the community," Bigler stated. He emphasized eBay’s long-standing commitment to supporting small businesses and democratizing commerce, principles that have been integral to its identity for over three decades. "How can we support small business? How can we democratize commerce? That’s been since eBay’s founding 30 years ago… let’s use e-commerce to democratize business, and that’s part of eBay’s culture and TCGPlayer’s culture. That support for the community is massive and big, and that’s what has helped us as TCGPlayer experiment, try things, because they’ve been supportive of us continuing to be the best that TCGPlayer can be." This alignment in ethos, Bigler suggests, ensures that TCGPlayer can continue to innovate and serve its community effectively while leveraging the strengths of its parent company.

One tangible change that occurred under eBay’s stewardship was the relocation of TCGPlayer’s headquarters from Syracuse, New York, to Kentucky in the summer of 2023. This consolidation involved the closure of the Syracuse facility, a decision that impacted over 200 employees. Bigler acknowledged the difficulty of this transition. "It was a hard thing to do. It was a very, very tough decision to make," he admitted.

The strategic rationale behind the move, as explained by Bigler, was to optimize fulfillment operations. By relocating the fulfillment center to Louisville, Kentucky, TCGPlayer aimed to reduce shipping times for both sellers sending cards to the fulfillment center and for the company shipping cards to buyers. This move was intended to enhance efficiency and improve the overall customer experience. "What it has impacted is by moving the fulfillment center that was here to Louisville, we’ve decreased the amount of time it takes our sellers to ship cards to the fulfillment center, and we’ve decreased the amount of time it takes us to ship cards out to the buyers."

Bigler further reported that the new facility is meeting and, in some cases, exceeding previous quality and throughput standards. "And now we’re at a point where that fulfillment center is hitting the quality standards that we used to have and starting to hit the volume throughput that we had before." The larger footprint of the new Kentucky facility also offers significant potential for future expansion, positioning TCGPlayer for continued growth. The centrally located nature of Louisville was also cited as a key advantage from a fulfillment perspective, benefiting both sellers and buyers through more efficient logistics.

Addressing the operational shift, Bigler also noted that TCGPlayer had already embraced a significant degree of remote work prior to the headquarters relocation. "TCGPlayer was remote starting in like 2018/2019," he explained. "So from my management perspective, engineering, product, all the other teams have largely been remote for eight years, even before Covid." This pre-existing remote infrastructure meant that the transition in many departments was less disruptive than it might have been for a company with a fully office-bound workforce. "Not much has changed from that perspective, because it’s not like everybody was going into the office every day anyway." This long-standing adoption of remote work has likely contributed to the smoother integration of the fulfillment center consolidation.
